The good news: New technology is making organ transplants possible for thousands more people annually.

The bad news: The number of people willing to donate organs has remained virtually unchanged, creating a shortage.

About 40,000 people waited for organs last year in the U.S.; 16,000 received a transplant. More than 2,500 died waiting.

Some people suggest a touchy solution: dollars for donors. The idea: You agree to donate, say, your heart after you die, and your family would get money in return.

But some people worry that cash for kidneys would mean that eventually only the rich could afford transplants. Some suggest that the idea be tried for six months.
