Concerning the mystique of the Chicago Picasso, there is no question in my mind that it is a rendition of the ancient Egyptian god Thoth, often personified with the head of a baboon. (Picasso was much influenced by Egyptology.) Thoth was god of ”wisdom, learning and magic, the inventor of numbers and letters, and scribe of all the gods” as defined in the dictionary.
Did Picasso offer this as a joke? Or is it a splendid, modern representation of a god to remind us of both past and future? A homage to the intellect.
