President Bush and Vice President Quayle have said they would support their adult daughters if they were determined to have an abortion. Why should such statements mean they were ”snagged by abortion query,” as your headline proclaimed?

An individual can believe firmly that abortion is wrong, yet share the anguish that accompanies the need for such a decision. When more than 4,000 abortions are performed per day in this country, few of us can remain untouched by the fear, anxiety and guilt-to say nothing of the physical risks- that accompany the decision to abort a child.

We have allowed ourselves to be divided by posturing and rhetoric from both sides of the abortion issue, wasting precious time and energy that should be devoted to addressing the social issues that contribute so mightily to this problem. There is no point in waiting for 100 percent agreement on the right or wrong of abortion-that day will never come. Meantime, let`s stop maligning each other and work together to find solutions to this vexing situation.
