– ILLINOIS BENEDICTINE 25, MILLIKIN 24-The Eagles (1-1) knocked off Millikin

(0-1), ranked No. 22 in the Division III poll, on Mark Reid`s 9-yard run with 1:45 left in Lisle. IBC`s Eric Green had 9 catches for 144 yards and 3 touchdowns, while quarterback Ed Smith was 27 of 51 for 296 yards. Tight end Bob McMillin added 9 catches for 77 yards. Millikin missed a 37-yard field goal with :33 left.

– AURORA 24, ANDERSON 6-Derek Tieman had 148 yards on 14 carries, including a 56-yard first-quarter touchdown run, and Derrick Avery teamed with Rod Stinson on a 63-yard pass play for another score as the Spartans won the opener for both teams in Anderson, Ind.

– LORAS 10, AUGUSTANA 7-Erick Renshaw kicked a 25-yard field goal with 2:31 left in the third quarter in Rock Island as Augie suffered its first season-opening loss since 1978. Loras` defense forced six Augustana fumbles, five of which were lost, and intercepted two passes. Loras (2-0) scored first on a 7-yard run by Jay Gruber with 1:37 left in the first quarter after an interception by Kevin Stevens. Augustana (0-1) tied the score on a 26-yard pass from Mark Rosello to Tom Brefeld early in the second quarter. Renshaw`s winning field goal came after Loras recovered a fumbled Augie punt on the Viking 9.

– CENTRAL STATE (Ohio) 7, ST. FRANCIS 3-Henderson Mosley`s 27-yard run in the third quarter was the difference for Central State (2-0) in Joliet. St. Francis (0-2) scored on Piero Setta`s 28-yard field goal. Charles Thompson, the former Oklahoma quarterback who served time in prison for a drug conviction, saw his first extended playing time for Central. He had 90 yards on 22 carries and caught two passes for 20 yards. He also had a 54-yard TD run called back by a penalty.

– ROSE-HULMAN 34, KNOX 14-Quarterback Eric Steinbach ran for three touchdowns for Rose-Hulman (1-1) in Knox`s season opener at Galesburg.

– ROCK VALLEY 20, JOLIET 13-Two long runs-a 49-yarder by Mike Thomas and a 43- yarder by Jason West-helped Rock Valley (1-1, 1-1) to a 20-0 lead and the N4C victory in Rockford. Joliet (0-2, 0-1) made it close on TDs by Clayton Moore (24-yard reception from Tony Hafner) and Marty Corley (1-yard run).

– TRITON 50, ILLINOIS VALLEY 14-Ramon Edwards (152 yards on 15 carries) scored touchdowns on runs of 13 and 66 yards as Triton (2-0, 2-0) amassed 407 total yards in North Central Community College Conference play in La Salle. Chad Bowman (13 of 20, 167 yards) added a touchdown pass for Triton. Illinois Valley is 1-1, 0-1.

– CARROLL 34, NORTH CENTRAL 18-Sophomore Steve Harris rushed for 208 yards on 11 carries and scored four touchdowns to pace Carroll in the opener for both teams in Waukesha, Wis. Harris scored on runs of 61 and 75 yards, a 12-yard pass reception and an 82-yard kickoff return.

– WHEATON 29, LAKE FOREST 0-Tim Tully connected on 7 of 8 passes for 122 yards and one touchdown and scored another in both teams` opener in Wheaton.

– CHICAGO 21, CONCORDIA (Ill.) 3-Frank Baker rushed for 179 yards and a TD on 29 carries for Chicago (1-1) in River Forest. Concordia is 0-1.

– TRINITY 16, CULVER-STOCKTON 16-A 1-yard plunge by Chris Moore followed by a two-point conversion with one minute left gave Culver-Stockton (0-0-1) the tie in Deerfield. Trinity (1-0-1) scored on a 5-yard run by Pat Johnson and Chuck Lambert`s 65-yard interception return.

– MONMOUTH 26, EUREKA 15-Freshman Jerry Cato ran for 101 yards and a TD in Eureka. Monmouth is 1-0; Eureka is 1-1.

– ILLINOIS COLLEGE 30, PRINCIPIA 7-Carlton Goff rushed for 147 yards and two TDs in Elsah in the opener for both teams.

– BENEDICTINE (Kan.) 38, QUINCY 13-Steve Torline rushed for 158 yards and two touchdowns to lead visiting Benedictine in the opener for both teams. Quincy`s scores came on a 29-yard pass from Jake Ryan to Nobey Gooden and a 68-yard run by Mark Joyce.

MIDWEST

– KANSAS 62, BALL STATE 10-In Lawrence, Kan., Dan Eichloff kicked a school-record 61-yard field goal, Chip Hilleary (9 of 22 for 197 yards) threw three touchdown passes and Kansas rolled up its highest point total in 24 years. Eichloff was a yard shy of the Big Eight record when he connected with the aid of a strong wind in the third period. He broke his school record of 58 set two years ago. Wide receiver Matt Gay caught and threw a touchdown pass as Kansas (2-0) had it biggest day since scoring 68 against New Mexico in 1968.

– OHIO U. 27, KENT STATE 14-Thomas Dubbs completed 10 of 23 passes for 147 yards and three touchdowns for the Bobcats (1-1) in Kent, Ohio. Troy Robinson ran for 180 yards and two touchdiwns on nine carries for Kent State (0-2).

– AKRON 23, TOLEDO 20-Daron Alcorn kicked three field goals, including a 56-yarder as time ran out, to lead the host Zips (2-0, 2-0). Marcel Weems threw a 54-yard TD pass to Laverne Bass in the first quarter for Akron. Weems also scored on a 14-yard run in the second quarter. Toledo is 1-1, 0-1.

– HILLSDALE 45, VALPARAISO 7-Scott Schulte carried 30 times for 221 yards and two touchdowns and coach Dick Lowry got his 100th win at Hillsdale. Lowry, in his 13th season, is 100-34-1. The Chargers are 2-0, 2-0. The Crusaders (0-2, 0-2) lost quarterback Rob Rayl when he was knocked unconscious early in the fourth quarter. He was taken to Hillsdale Community Health Center, where he was being treated in the emergency room for unspecified injuries, said a nursing supervisor.

SOUTH

– EAST CAROLINA 30, VIRGINIA TECH 27-Michael Anderson (26 of 42 for 349 yards) threw three second-half touchdown passes, including a 21-yard strike to Carlester Crumpler with 42 seconds left, for East Carolina (1-1) in Greenville, N.C. Anderson`s scoring pass made up for three interceptions, two of which led to scores by Virginia Tech (1-1).

– WILLIAM & MARY 21, VMI 16-Scott Wingfield ran for two TDs and Jermaine Rosser intercepted two passes for William & Mary (1-0) in Williamsburg, Va. VMI is 0-2.

– LIBERTY 55, MORGAN STATE 27-Matt Council (158 yards on 14 carries) scored four touchdowns for Liberty (1-1) in Lynchburg, Va. Council`s 8-yard burst late in the first quarter put Liberty ahead for good 10-7. The sophomore added third-quarter runs of 1 and 12 yards and a fourth-quarter TD of 38 yards. Morgan State is 0-1.

– LOUISVILLE 16, MEMPHIS STATE 15-Louisville netted 75 yards on a questionable fourth-quarter ”do-over” and Anthony Shelman scored on a 1-yard run with 59 seconds remaining to lift the Cardinals to the victory in Louisville. The

”do-over” came about after Memphis State`s Jeff Buffaloe punted 53 yards to Louisville`s 7 with 1:58 remaining. The clock should have stopped for a change of possession but the timekeeper let it run to 1:23. After the officials conferred for about five minutes, they decided to penalize Memphis State for offsides and ordered the down replayed. On the replay, the snap was high and Louisville`s Robert Knuutila tackled backup punter Andy McWilliams at the 18. Four plays later, Shelman scored the winning TD.

– NORTH CAROLINA 28, FURMAN 0-Tripp Pignetti kicked the first two field goals of his career and Natrone Means scored two touchdowns as the Tar Heels (2-0)

won in Chapel Hill despite four turnovers. North Carolina quarterbacks threw three interceptions and the Tar Heels also lost a fumble-all in Furman territory. But Furman (1-1) lost starting quarterback Hugh Swilling early in the second quarter with a sprained left ankle and couldn`t mount much of an offense.

– MISSISSIPPI 35, TULANE 9-Russ Shows completed 19 of 26 passes for 195 yards and two touchdowns and ran for two more scores in Oxford, Miss. Ole Miss is 2-0; Tulane is 1-1.

– ARKANSAS 45, SOUTH CAROLINA 7-Arkansas` Orlando Watters returned an interception 45 yards for one TD and a punt 87 yards for another, and Jason Allen passed for 178 yards and two more scores in Columbia, S.C. Arkansas was playing for the first time under new head coach Joe Kines, who took over after Jack Crowe resigned following an opening loss to the Citadel. South Carolina is 0-2.

– VANDERBILT 42, DUKE 37-Eric Lewis` 6-yard run with 3:51 left capped an 80-yard drive and lifted the Commodores (1-1) to the victory in Nashville. Duke (1-1) tried to rally one last time in a seesaw game in which the lead changed five times. But the Commodore defense shut the Blue Devils down when Aaron Smith intercepted Tom Prince`s pass with 2:43 left.

– LOUISIANA TECH 31, EASTERN MICHIGAN 17-In Ruston, La., Shane Benoit ran for Tech`s four touchdowns. He ran for only 55 yards, but 22 came on scoring runs of 6, 1, 2 and 13 yards for Tech (2-0). The Bulldogs` other score came on Chris Boniol`s 22-yard field goal that staked Tech to a 3-0 lead after the first period. The victory over Eastern Michigan (0-2) ran Tech`s unbeaten streak to 12 games and extended its home winning streak to 13 games.

– WAKE FOREST 10, APPALACHIAN STATE 7-Tight end John Henry Mills caught a 4-yard TD pass from Keith West with 1:11 left to give Wake Forest (1-1) the victory in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Mountaineers are 0-2.

SOUTHWEST

– SOUTHERN METHODIST 28, NORTH TEXAS STATE 14-Reserve Kevin Shepard ran for two second-half touchdowns and Brian Berry caught a 65-yard TD pass for SMU in Dallas. The Mustangs of the Southwest Conference and North Texas, a Division I-AA team, are each 1-1. SMU quarterback Mike Romo and offensive lineman Marty Solombrino, both out with injuries, were suspended from the game by the NCAA for keeping money they received last year for selling their textbooks. The punishment was announced by SMU before kickoff.

– WESTERN MICHIGAN 17, TEXAS CHRISTIAN 17-TCU`s Jeff Wilkinson kicked a 39-yard field goal with 1:51 left in Ft. Worth to salvage the tie and spoil a career-best 336-yard passing performance by Bronco QB Brad Tayles. Western Michigan (0-0-1) led 17-14 and appeared headed for victory after Pierre Hixon intercepted Leon Clay`s pass at the Broncos 33 with 6:55 to go. But TCU`s Manvel Hopes intercepted Tayles` pass at the Frogs` 44 three plays later to set up the game-tying kick for Wilkinson, who had missed from 42 and 44 yards in the first half. TCU is 0-1-1. Tayles completed 27 of 43 passes and was intercepted twice.

– TEXAS TECH 49, WYOMING 32-In Lubbock, Robert Hall threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score and Byron Morris rushed for three touchdowns. Morris put Tech (1-1) up for good, 28-24, midway through the third quarter after bouncing off two tacklers in the middle of Wyoming`s defense and bolting to the sideline on a 51-yard TD run. Wyoming is 1-1.

FAR WEST

– HAWAII 6, AIR FORCE 3-Redshirt freshman Rodney Glover, seeing the first action of his collegiate career, relieved injured starting quarterback Michael Carter and directed Hawaii (2-0, 1-0) to the only two field goals it needed at Colorado Springs. Air Force is 1-1, 0-1. Glover, the nephew of actor Danny Glover, came into the game when Carter departed early in the second quarter with a bruised lower left leg.

– IDAHO 37, COLORADO STATE 34-Mike Hollis` 29-yard field goal with 46 seconds remaining capped a 20-point fourth quarter and lifted Idaho to the victory in Ft. Collins, Colo. Idaho (2-0), ranked No. 9 in the Division I-AA poll, came back from deficits of 28-0 in the first quarter and 31-10 at the half. Vandals quarterback Doug Nussmeier completed 22 of 33 passes for 390 yards and two TDs, including a 31-yarder to Sherridan May which tied the score 34-34 with 3:57 to go. CSU is 0-2.

– OREGON STATE 46, FRESNO STATE 36-Quarterback Mark Olford rushed for 144 yards in 11 carries, including touchdown runs of 32 and 68 yards, in Corvallis, Ore. Chad Paulson rushed for 129 yards, including 57 for a touchdown, and Dwayne Owens gained 94, 57 of them in a dash down the sidelines for the game-clinching score with 6:39 to play. It was the second time a Jerry Pettibone-coached team has rolled up big numbers against coach Jim Sweeney`s Bulldogs. Pettibone`s Northern Illinois team rushed for 733 yards against Fresno State in a 73-18 win two years ago. Both teams are 1-1.

– WASHINGTON STATE 23, ARIZONA 20-Aaron Price`s third field goal, a 47-yarder with 31 seconds to go, gave Washington State the victory in a defensive-dominated Pacific-10 Conference opener in Tucson. The second of Drew Bledsoe`s two second-half touchdown passes, a 19-yarder to Phillip Bobo with 8:54 to go, pulled the Cougars (2-0) into a 20-20 tie. Late in the third quarter, Bledsoe had found Deron Pointer in the right end zone on a 28-yard scoring pass to cut Arizona`s lead to 17-13. The Wildcats are 1-1. Washington State linebacker Anthony McClanahan and safety John Rushing keyed a defensive effort that limited Arizona to 58 yards rushing on 31 attempts and 223 yards overall.

– UTAH 42, UTAH STATE 18-Frank Dolce passed for two touchdowns and ran for another in Logan. Dolce was 25 of 42 for 376 yards for the Runnin` Utes (1-1). State is 0-2.
