The article by Gary Marx, ”A hunger so severe that it stunts poor,”

which appeared Sept. 14, contains a major error. The average farmer cannot take in 1,500 calories daily and expend 3,000 calories for more than a short time without dying, since he would have to lose a pound or more a day to make up the energy difference.

The farmer in the story is still alive and reproducing 13 living children after 48 years, so he is eating more and/or working less.
