If an editorial cartoonist in this country were to portray homosexuals with stereotypically negative sexual innuendo, he or she would be denounced for ”gay-bashing.” Indeed, even taking a reasoned religious or ethical position that calmly states that same-sex activity is wrong is now viciously denounced (in the name of tolerance!) as gay-bashing.
I get the message: Intolerance is okay if directed by the right groups at the right groups. If an editorial cartoonist in this country denigrates African-Americans, he or she will be called racist. Why are this country`s Catholics (and Protestant fundamentalists, I might add) fair game when other ethnic and religious minorities are not?
This country has a long history of virulent anti-Catholicism. It deserves to be called what it is: dehumanizing prejudice. Cut out the Catholic-bashing. Be big enough to apologize. This is not written by a Roman Catholic.
