I missed Henry F. Green`s letter about the 1st sergeant (”Picture this,” Oct. 13). However, F.C. Robinson in his letter of Nov. 4 (”Counting stripes”) is wrong in his attempt to correct the sergeant`s insignia of rank. The rank of a U.S. Army 1st sergeant was elevated from technical sergeant, two rockers below, to master sergeant, a six striper, three above and three below, with the lozenge, during World War II about 1943.
I ought to know. After the war, on Dec. 1, 1945, in Japan I was promoted to 1st sergeant.
