Andre Agassi defeated upset-minded Marcos Ondruska 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 Sunday to win the Purex Championships.
Ondruska, who had beaten seeded players Francisco Clavet, Brad Gilbert and Andrei Chesnokov to reach the finals, was the first opponent to win a set from Agassi, the eighth-ranked player on the ATP Tour this season.
Agassi’s victory was worth $39,600.
“I would have taken a two-set win, but you don’t feel like you deserve a title unless you have to get through some adversity,” said Agassi, who is 12-1 in singles play this season with titles in San Francisco and Scottsdale. “On the way home, I’ll think about what a good week this was.”
Agassi, seeded No. 2, had lost just 11 games in the tournament before the final.
