Aesthetics won out over technology as the Village Board rejected a proposed 226-foot Commonwealth Edison microwave tower at its substation south of Ogden Avenue, near Interstate Highway 355.
Responding to earlier objections from the board, Edison agreed to move the tower farther from the road. But Edison official Tom Wiedman said that would mean adding 8 feet to the tower to avoid interference. The tower would provide a communications link between Edison substations in Lockport and Lombard.
Although other options are available, including fiber optics and installing radio frequency signals directly on the power lines, Wiedman said both would be more expensive than a microwave tower.
