Three Chicago women-Brenda Bolden, Elena Duran and Carmen Velasquez-were among the 11 recipients of “City Brightener” awards from the the Bright New City organization. The non-profit coalition of Chicago’s leaders has given the awards to people who make Chicago a better place to live. Honorees were cited for their efforts ranging from community health-care centers to establishing gardens in public housing developments.
