– Michael Hirsley’s March 5 column on Elizabeth Clare Prophet, leader of the Church Universal and Triumphant, said her husband “was charged with smuggling machine guns.” According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office and U.S. District Court in Spokane, Wash., Prophet’s husband, Edward Francis, pleaded guilty and was convicted in 1989 of “conspiracy to make false statements in acquisition of firearms,” including .50-caliber semi-automatic rifles, but not machine guns.
