Susan Nelson’s Feb. 23 letter (“Deviant behavior”) claims mothers in military towns are afraid to let their daughters go out on Friday night because of the deviant sexual behavior of heterosexual military personnel.

There must have been a lot of motherless young women, or defiant young girls, around Ft. Belvoir, Va., from 1951 to 1953, because every Friday night when my GI buddies and I went into town, the bars and dance halls were filled to capacity with young girls. And not one of the young women carted along their mother as a chaperone.
