Residents will get a discount of up to $70 a year on summer sewer bills starting in May, but they may be hit with higher sewer and water rates by winter.
Homeowners on the Du Page County side of Hanover Park would benefit the most from the discount, which is intended to eliminate the traditional overbilling for sewer use in summer, officials said.
In May, June, July and August, residents would pay sewer bills based on their winter water usage, instead of actual water consumption, as is the practice now. Cook County residents are billed differently, so their savings will average only $6 per summer, said Village Manager Marc Hummel.
But the discount would be offset if the Village Board approves the year-round sewer and water rate increases that were proposed at a Wednesday night meeting.
Under the plan, a sewer bill would rise 5 cents per thousand gallons of water a year in Du Page County, while a Cook County bill would rise 6 cents. The increases would continue for 5 years.
Water bills would jump 11 cents per thousand gallons of water a year for 5 years throughout the village.
