Imagination (Curtis Fuller, Savoy Jazz).

Trombonist Curtis Fuller is due more respect than he’s ever gotten, traveling as he did in the shadow of J.J. Johnson. In fact, they are very different players. Johnson’s more agile. Fuller has a more distinctive voice. Here in a 1959 recording with tenor saxophonist Benny Golson and pianist McCoy Tyner, among others, he does a set of originals and standards. And for the most part it is good. Unfortunately, though, the excessively up-tempo “Bong Bong” is a showy mistake.
