Debussy: Prelude a l’apres-midi d’un faune; Images pour orchestre; Printemps (Cleveland Orchestra; Pierre Boulez, conductor; Deutsche Grammophon).

Boulez first recorded these works and more in London and Cleveland nearly 20 years ago, and that famous set is available on the budget Odyssey label. However, those who already have “La Mer” and the “Nocturnes” should not hesitate to acquire the current disc, as the performances are beautifully sculpted.

The “Prelude” is cool and smooth as jade, without Ballets Russes voluptuousness. “Iberia” has more color but reminds us that the pieces are French evocations of Spain, with clarity and balance given precedence over steamy atmosphere. In such company, the early “Printemps” may surprise listeners with its flexibility and plush tone.
