Earnings jump: Lawson Products Inc. said Tuesday that cost reductions and a lower tax rate helped it post a 17 percent increase in first-quarter earnings. The Des Plaines-based maker and distributor of industrial repair and replacement parts said its operating profit rose to $3.85 million, or 28 cents a share, from $3.29 million, or 24 cents, a year earlier. Sales climbed 4 percent to $47.1 million from $45.1 million.
