Esprit de core: Not to worry. It’ll be open in time for apple picking. Marion and Bob Quig of Quig’s Orchards on Illinois Highway 83 in Mundelein are fixing to serve up their apple delicacies in a new 100-seat restaurant come late summer. Under construction, the addition will face the orchard behind the exisiting structure, which houses the original restaurant, country store, craft shop and greenhouse. The Quigs hope to accommodate the hungry crowds who stand in line, 50 to 60 deep, for breakfast and lunch during apple season.

Bob Quig started the apple orchard in 1947 with his parents. Now his wife, two sons, daughter and their spouses all run the family business. “As long as our family is interested, we’re here to stay. Last fall we planted 200 new trees and 100 more this spring,” Marion said, responding to folks who worry that the new housing construction all around them will force them out. “We’re a little island all by ourselves here.”
