– 1957: With President Eisenhower looking on, Minnie Minoso and Larry Doby each hit a pair of home runs to help the White Sox and Dick Donovan (11-3) beat the Washington Senators 7-1 at Griffith Stadium.

– 1961: Jerry Barber edges Don January by one stroke in a playoff to win the PGA Championship.

– 1968: Washington’s Ron Hansen pulls off the eighth unassisted triple play in baseball history during Cleveland’s 10-1 victory. Three days later, Hansen is traded to the White Sox for Tim Cullen.

– 1976: Bruce Jenner sets the world record in the Olympic decathlon with 8,618 points, breaking by 164 points Nikolai Avilov’s mark, set in the 1972 Olympics.
