Ken Griffey Jr. became the 10th youngest player in major league history to hit 40 home runs in a season.
Griffey, 23, hit a two-run homer in the first inning to become the 12th player to hit 40 or more homers in a season before their 24th birthday.
With his shot off the top of the center-field wall, Griffey tied Juan Gonzalez of Texas for the major-league home run lead. Gonzalez hit 43 homers last season, when he was 22.
