Sam Birnbaum, 103, of Chicago, died Monday in the Northwest Home for the Aged in Chicago. Mr. Birnbaum, who emigrated from Poland in 1907, was a U.S. Army sergeant in World War I. He worked as a foreman designing knitting machinery for Vienna Art Knitting Mills of Chicago during the 1940s, and later owned a laundry service. Later he worked as a valet at an apartment building on East Pearson Street. He is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Kipnis and Rita Morton; a brother; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Services were held Wednesday.
