Village officials contend that a state law mandating carpooling for employers with more than 100 workers is unworkable at the municipal level.
More than 150 people work for the village but several are in public safety jobs where carpooling is next to impossible, said village manager Wayne Lulay.
The state law intends to change the way employees reach their workplaces in an attempt to cut down on air pollution caused by cars.
“We think public safety employees are exempted,” said Lulay, who intends to meet soon with Illinois Department of Transportation officials over interpretations of the law.
Village trustees have adopted a resolution that urges state officials to exempt public safety employees from the law.
