Police say a domestic quarrel has left one man in critical condition in an area hospital and another in jail charged with attempted murder.

Burnest W. Veasy, 35, of 500 Whitley Ave., Joliet, is being held in the Will County Jail on a charge of attempted murder after police said he tried to kill David Smith, 51, of Landau Avenue, Joliet, Wednesday night during an quarrel in the 1000 block of Parkwood Avenue. Smith was taken to Silver Cross Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition Thursday.

“(Veasy) hit the victim in the back of the head with a piece of a railroad tie and crushed his skull,” said Joliet police Capt. James Grace.

Grace said that Veasy and Smith began arguing in front of an apartment building at 1006 Parkwood Ave. During the quarrel, Grace said, Smith entered the building to get a niece of Veasy’s in an attempt to settle the dispute. Upon returning, Veasy hit Smith in the head with what Grace called a “very heavy piece of wood.” He added that police later found a 5-foot-long piece of wood at the scene.
