Four-time PBA champion Danny Wiseman averaged 235 over eight games Friday and took a 44-pin lead over Mark Williams after the first round of the $250,000 Brunswick Memorial World Open at Deer Park Lanes in Lake Zurich.

Wiseman, 26, of Portland, Ore., who last won at St. Louis in 1991, had a total pinfall of 1,887 to take the lead over Williams, a six-time champion who last won at the 1988 Tournament of Champions.

“I’ve had a really tough year,” said Wiseman. “I haven’t made a show (the finals) since the 1992 Tournament of Champions, and it’s been a long time.”

Just one pin behind Williams was Mark Bowers, who was followed by Japan’s Takeo Sakai (1,832) and Bob Vespi (1,800). Vernon Hills’ Bill Spigner is ninth at 1,783.

The stepladder finals are Wednesday, with the winner earning $45,000 and a boat.
