I hope that everyone who has been reading the Tribune’s extensive report on the Medicaid system catches the moral: By imposing upon poor people a substandard system of health care in order to save money, we wind up paying more-in terms of money, human lives and human potential lost.
Now that we have a chance to effect health care reform, let’s allow people in poverty the same coverage that will be enjoyed by everyone else under the universal health care plan.
The Medicaid fiasco is a variation of “penny wise, pound foolish.”
We think we cannot extend decent health care to poor people; the fact is, we can’t afford not to.
