Costlier smoke: The American Tobacco Co., maker of Lucky Strike and Carlton cigarettes, raised premium and discount brand cigarette prices by $2 per 1,000 cigarettes, or 40 cents a carton. The move follows Thursday’s similar announcement by No. 1 cigarette-maker Philip Morris Cos. Other major tobacco companies to boost cigarette prices recently are Liggett Group Inc., a unit of Brooke Group Ltd.; Lorillard Inc., a unit of Loews Corp.; and R.J. Reynolds Co., a unit of RJR Nabisco Holdings Corp. The only big U.S. cigarette-maker that has not raised prices is the Brown & Williamson unit of B.A.T Industries Plc.
