– Augustana 14, Wheaton 6-Greg Weber scored on a 46-yard pass from Tommy King as Augustana captured the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin championship in Wheaton. Bob Baird opened the scoring for Augustana (7-2, 7-0) by grabbing a 14-yard pass from King in the first quarter. Mark Loeffler tied it up for Wheaton (7-2, 6-1) with a 9-yard pass reception from Jeff Brown. But Augustana came back three minutes later with the King-Weber TD connection.

– College of Du Page 13, Harper 10-Dwayne Gray gained 211 yards on 49 carries and scored two touchdowns as College of Du Page (11-0) won its fifth consecutive Region IV NJCAA State Championship.

– Illinois Wesleyan 41, North Park 28-Bill Brown threw for 313 yards and two touchdowns in leading Illinois Wesleyan (4-5, 3-4 CCIW) in Bloomington. North Park (4-4-1, 2-4-1) got 390 yards and four touchdowns passing from Doug Schmitt.

– Greenville 35, Concordia 13-Rodney Jackson threw a touchdown pass and ran for another score as Greenville prevailed in the Illini-Badger Conference game at Mequon, Wis. Jackson completed four of eight passes for 41 yards, and carried 16 times for 67 yards.

– Milliken 41, Elmhurst 2-LaJhaune Scott ran for 151 yards and two touchdowns in Elmhurst. In the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin game, Scott scored on an 8-yard run to open the scoring and added an 18-yarder in the third quarter to put Millikin (6-3, 5-2 CCIW) ahead 27-2.

– St. Ambrose 27, Western Illinois 25-Pete Ivanic kicked a 32-yard field goal with 18 seconds left for St. Ambrose in Macomb. St. Ambrose quarterback Omar Navarro completed 21 of 39 passes for 239 yards.

– Trinity 63, Lakeland 7-Quarterback Todd Johnson ran for 217 yards and a record seven touchdowns in Deerfield. In the season finale for both schools, Johnson set an NAIA Division II standard for most touchdowns in a game. He also set season marks for most touchdowns, 31, and most points scored, 190. His longest scoring run was 25 yards for Trinity (8-2).

GATEWAY

– Illinois St. 13, Youngstown St. 10-Danny Barnett hit Kevin Glenn with a 71-yard touchdown pass with 2:50 left to lift Illinois State over Youngstown State, the nation’s top-rated Div. I-AA team, in Normal. Glenn caught the ball at midfield and sprinted the rest of the way. On Youngstown’s last possession, the Penguins (8-2) lost the ball on downs at the Illinois State 25 with 45 seconds left. Barnett completed 29 of 45 passes for 295 yards for the Redbirds, who end their first winning season since 1985 at 6-4-1.

– Northern Iowa 49, Southern Ill. 17-Kurt Warner connected on three touchdown passes to Tim Mosley and Jeff Stovall ran for three more TDs in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Northern Iowa (8-3 overall, 5-1 conference) will win the Gateway Conference crown outright if Western Illinois loses at Indiana State on Nov. 20. It’s the fourth straight year the Panthers have won or shared the title.

– Western Ky. 28, Eastern Ill. 14-Antwan Floyd paced a potent rushing attack with 118 yards and one touchdown as No. 25 Western Kentucky won in Division I-AA action in Bowling Green, Ky. Floyd’s 43-yard run set up a 15-yard score by Davion Sarver to put Western up 28-14 with 4:03 left.

MIDWEST

– Ball State 31, Akron 9-Mike Blair had three touchdown runs in his 129 rushing yards as Ball State took sole possession of first place in the Mid-American Conference with the road victory. The Cardinals’ hot passing combination of quarterback Mike Neu and flanker Brian Oliver was also on target. New threw a 24-yard scoring pass, his 17th, for Oliver’s ninth touchdown catch of the season.

– Drake 29, Evansville 27-Bill Willers kicked a 30-yard field goal with 1:16 left in play for Drake in Des Moines, Iowa. Drake (8-2 overall, 3-2 in the Patriot League) finishes the season in a tie for second in the conference with Butler. Evansville closes out the season 6-4 overall and 2-3 in the conference.

– Wabash 40, DePauw 26-Quarterback Chris Ings ran for three touchdowns as Wabash defeated DePauw in Greencastle, Ind., to break a deadlock in the teams’ century-old rivalry. Wabash (5-4 overall) finished the season in sole possession of third place in the Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference at 4-2, and took a 46-45-9 edge in the series, which began in 1890.

EAST

– Army 35, Lafayette 12-Rick Roper ran for two touchdowns in West Point, N.Y., and the Army wishbone offense finally clicked after four straight losses. Army went ahead 14-6 in the first quarter and then held off the Leopards for the 15th time in 16 meetings, gaining 320 yards on the ground.

– Boston 30, Connecticut 16-Robert Dougherty threw for a career-high 339 yards and ran for a touchdown and Zack Burwell rushed for 142 yards and two more scores in Storrs, Conn. Boston (10-0 overall, 7-0 Yankee Conference) secured at least a tie for the league title with one game remaining against James Madison next week.

– Columbia 29, Cornell 24-Columbia cornerback Gary Edmonds broke up a fourth-down pass in the end zone with less than a minute left as the Lions withstood a late Cornell charge in Ithaca, N.Y.

– Dartmouth 39, Brown 16-Pete Oberle ran for 102 yards on 19 carries and quarterback Jay Fiedler passed for 299 yards in Hanover, N.J. Dartmouth built a 13-3 first quarter lead on a 26-yard touchdown pass from Fiedler to Andre Grant and a 1-yard touchdown run by Fiedler.

– Penn 27, Harvard 20-Jimmy McGeehan passed for three touchdowns, including a pair within 2:21 in the third period after a fumble recovery and an interception, and unbeaten Penn clenched at least a tie for the Ivy League championship in Cambridge, Mass.

– Princeton 28, Yale 7-Keith Elias ran for 198 yards and scored three touchdowns and Princeton kept alive its slim Ivy League title hopes in Princeton, N.J. Princeton (8-1, 5-1 Ivy) needs to beat Dartmouth next weekend in the season finale and have Cornell knock off unbeaten Penn to grab a share of the league crown.

SOUTH

– Alabama-Birmingham 27, Dayton 19-Terry Dollerson ran an interception back for 68 yards and a touchdown for the University of Alabama-Birmingham, ending Dayton’s 46-game winning streak, the longest in the nation.

– Kentucky 6, East Carolina 3-Backup kicker Nicky Nickels booted a 29-yard field goal with 28 seconds left as Kentucky struggled in Lexington to ensure its first winning season since 1989. Kentucky (6-4) also kept its bowl hopes alive as it remains in contention for the Peach Bowl and Sunshine Classic. East Carolina (2-8) lost its fourth straight game.

– Georgia Tech 38, Wake Forest 28-Dorsey Levens ran for 141 yards and three touchdowns, and Donnie Davis threw two scoring passes to lead Georgia Tech in Winston-Salem. Davis, 15 of 21 for 217 yards, completed a 23-yard touchdown pass to Omar Cassidy with 11:32 left to play to seal the triumph for Georgia Tech.

– N.C. State 44, Maryland 21-Terry Harvey threw for 264 yards and two scores as North Carolina State almost assured itself of a sixth straight bowl appearance in Raleigh. The Wolfpack (7-3, 4-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) also performed well on defense, limiting the nation’s third-best passing team to 79 yards through the air midway through the third quarter while building a 23-7 lead.

– Virginia Tech 45, Syracuse 24-Maurice DeShazo threw two touchdown passes to tight end John Burke and Dwayne Thomas ran for 163 yards and a touchdown in Blacksburg, Va. Virginia Tech (7-3, 4-3 Big East) capitalized on four turnovers by Syracuse (5-4-1, 2-4) by scoring three touchdowns and a field goal and appeared to wrap up its first bowl bid in seven seasons under coach Frank Beamer.

SOUTHWEST

– Cincinnati 41, Houston 17-David Small rushed 31 times for 203 yards and four touchdowns in Houston. Small, who topped the 100-yard rushing mark for the fourth straight game, scored on runs of 2, 1, 5 and 11 yards as the Bearcats (7-3) opened a 24-0 halftime lead and swept to their fourth consecutive victory.

– Texas 24, TCU 3-Mike Adams caught two touchdown passes from Shea Morenz as Texas rolled in Austin. The Longhorns (4-4-1 overall, 4-1 Southwest Conference) kept their Cotton Bowl hopes alive as Morenz repeatedly found Adams open for big plays and the defense stuffed TCU on three crucial fourth downs and intercepted three passes.

FAR WEST

– Idaho 77, Lehigh 14-Quarterback Doug Nussmeier completed 14-of-20 passes for 308 yards and five touchdowns in Moscow, Idaho. Nussmeier threw touchdown passes to five different receivers and ran for a sixth in just over two quarters of play. The Vandals, of the Big Sky Conference, rolled up 694 yards of total offense, 350 on the ground and 344 through the air.

– Nevada 34, New Mexico St. 14-Senior Chris Vargas threw for 242 yards and three touchdowns in Las Cruces, N.M. Vargas, who leads the nation in total offense with 413 yards per game, took the Wolfpack on a 14-play, 80-yard touchdown drive on the game’s first possession. He capped the drive with a 28-yard touchdown pass to Mike Senior with 9:28 left in the first quarter.

– Utah 41, Air Force 24-Jamal Anderson ran for three touchdowns and caught another while Mike McCoy passed for 459 yards for host Utah. Air Force led 24-16 midway through the third quarter before the Utes stopped the Falcons’ wishbone attack and held them scoreless the rest of the way.
