The first customers are flocking to Arrowhead Towne Center in Glendale, Ariz., one of only two regional super-malls opening in the United States this year.
At 1.3 million square feet, Arrowhead is in a three-way tie for the distinction of being the state’s third-largest shopping center, said Veronica Lovesy, the mall’s marketing director.
The mall is anchored by Robinsons-May department store; Mervyn’s, an 83,232-square-foot department store; Dillard’s; Montgomery Ward & Co.; and J.C. Penney. Each of the five anchors will have two floors, and together the stores will occupy 59 percent of the mall’s total area.
Dillard’s, at 212,706 square feet, will be the largest store in the mall. Penney will have 160,173 square feet, and Montgomery Ward, 109,416 square feet.
Ninety additional stores and 11 merchandise carts debuted at the mall’s grand opening in mid-October, Lovesy said. An additional 15 should be open by Nov. 15, she said. In all, there is space for 155 stores, besides the five anchors, Lovesy said.
Arrowhead Towne Center is a joint development among Westcor Partners of Phoenix, Homart Development Co. of Chicago and JCP Realty Inc. of Dallas. Westcor Partners manages the mall. The nation’s only other new super-regional mall this year, so designated because it has more than 1 million square feet, is in Atlanta.
