A grant of $22,900 from General Mills has given Community Unit School District 303 the opportunity to continue educating its teachers about cooperative learning.
“We’re reaching a whole new level of teaching, getting kids learning to work as teams,” said Jayne Hetherington, curriculum coordinator.
The primary goal of the cooperative learning method is to have youngsters work together on educational projects to learn better communication skills. The students are assigned roles to ensure no child dominates the work.
“We need to put aside fears that the kids will go to school, work in groups and get lost in them,” Hetherington said. “We don’t want that.”
