The Indian Prairie School Board has approved a property tax levy request of $55 million, up about $7 million from last year.

Increases in the assessed values of homes in the Naperville/Aurora district and new development are expected to generate the additional dollars so the tax rate at which property tax bills are figured would hold steady.

“This levy request maintains a stable tax rate,” said Peter Gombert, the district’s associate superintendent for business. But, he noted, “If the assessment on a home increased, then the bill will go up. What this means is that what the district is asking for isn’t going to be the cause of the bill going up.”

Last year, the district received $48,048,872 and has proposed a tax levy of $55,331,391 to help fund the costs of continued enrollment growth.

An advisory committee of parents, teachers and residents is currently considering a referendum for new schools that would be placed on the March ballot.

If that happens and voters approve spending $75 million on a new high school, at least one new middle school and two elementary schools, the tax rate of most homeowners would be increased by about $100 annually, beginning in 1995, Supt. Thomas Scullen said.
