They won’t be home for Christmas, but twin boys born joined at the abdomen should make it by New Year’s-safe and separate.

Andrew and Joseph Sonnevil were in excellent condition after being separated and should go home to Michigan in about a week, Mayo Clinic surgeons in Rochester, Minn., said Wednesday.

They were born Oct. 26 to James and Christine Sonnevil of Decatur, Mich., and were separated Friday during a four-hour operation at Mayo Medical Center.

The boys “can now look forward to a completely normal life ahead,” said Dr. Christopher Moir, the pediatric surgeon who led the operation.

During the surgery, the infants’ heart sacs, sternum tip, liver and abdomen were separated.
