Your reference (WOMANEWS, Dec. 19) to Congressman Henry Hyde as “an unlikely champion of women’s and children’s rights” perpetuates the myth that pro-life leaders are concerned only for children in the womb. Why is Hyde’s concern for visible children and their mothers “unlikely”?
Both sides of the abortion issue have inconsistent members-from anti-abortionists who denounce food stamps and gun control to whale and seal lovers who condone the killing of pre-born humans. Inconsistency of spokespersons is irrelevant to the issue of whether abortion should be legal, but listeners and readers often discount valid arguments based on a speaker’s or writer’s perceived credibility. I am thus disappointed by your left-handed compliment to Rep. Hyde.
