The recent fatal truck-train accident in Gary, in which the truck driver ignored the railroad crossing sign, was typical of similar needless accidents each year. In some cases the vehicle driver waits for the train to clear the crossing and then proceeds without realizing that there could be an approaching train on any additional track.
Although there is nothing to make a rail crossing 100 percent accident-free, perhaps a sign could be installed saying “Warning-2 tracks” (or 3 or 4). Vehicle drivers might otherwise assume it is a single-track line, as is true of so many railroads in recent years.
The proposed sign might save the railroads millions of dollars, as well as lives of passengers, trainmen and other employees.
