There is nothing misguided about speaking out and fighting for health care reform which expands the excellence now available through the American health care system so that it becomes the standard for everyone.
What is misguided is the notion put forth in a Dec. 20 letter from registered nurse Mildred Perlia-that allowing nurses to practice independently, beyond the limits of their licenses and training, is a matter of consumer choice. It is not. It is an issue of quality. Your doctor’s extensive medical education and experience back up the standard of high-quality care you expect.
Physicians do support and work with nurse specialists, who often are a vital component of a medical team providing comprehensive care. Their role will only increase in a reformed health care system.
But Illinoisans deserve to have the confidence of knowing their health care team is led by a thoroughly trained and dedicated physician.
An erosion of this standard puts our good health at risk.
