I would like to commend Thomas Hardy for his Dec. 19 article, “Plan to legalize drugs exiles Gierach to `fringe’ status.” After witnessing the mass hysteria that greeted the surgeon general’s remarks concerning drug decriminalization, I was pleased with the level-headed treatment Hardy accorded proposals by James Gierach.
In an era where most candidates for public office seem to pander to knee-jerk reactions on every issue, I was amazed to find that Gierach had the courage to offer an answer to the nation’s No. 1 health problem.
