Ald. Ed Smith (28th) withdrew Thursday as a candidate in the Democratic primary for U.S. representative in the 7th Congressional District.

Smith said he wanted to focus on other races that he was “very concerned about” and would run for Congress in 1996 when local elections wouldn’t interfere.

“This time, my forces would be all split up,” he said.

U.S. Rep. Cardiss Collins (D-Ill.) still faces two challengers in the Democratic primary.

Smith said he will be working for Chicago attorney Albert Hofeld, a Democratic candidate for Illinois attorney general, and state Sen. Earlean Collins (D-Chicago), a candidate for state comptroller.
