While moralists attack the 59-year-old new mother on the grounds that her child deserves a younger mother, the child welfare system of Cook County, like those in most other American cities, is utterly dependent on grandparents to provide care for neglected children. Apparently it’s okay for poor children to be raised by elderly people, but the children of the affluent have the “right” to younger parents.
