If as Burr Ridge trustee Delores Cizek suggests (Jan. 10), leaf-burning should remain under local control, then I presume she would also be for the local control of pesticides.
Curiously enough, Gov. Edgar recently took away all such controls in signing another bill, SB85. As a result, even home-rule communities no longer have the right to set local rules and regulations regarding the use of pesticides. That right now belongs to the state alone.
Why is it OK for the state to regulate pesticides but not burning? Is it because asthmatics don’t have powerful lobbyists or spare PAC money?
Or is it because Gov. Edgar only uses the “inconsistency” defense when it’s not “inconvenient” or potentially “unprofitable” for him?
