The District 214 Board of Education recently approved a districtwide Americans With Disabilities Transition Plan at a cost of $1.18 million.
District architect Seymour M. Schwartz said that construction needed to implement the ADA Transition Plan will begin this summer at the district’s eight facilities, which include Buffalo Grove, Elk Grove, Hersey, Prospect, Rolling Meadows and Wheeling High Schools, as well as the Forest View Education Center and the Nipper School.
The transition plan was developed by a district committee that discussed the physical barriers in buildings that limit accessibility of programs, activities or services to individuals with disabilities.
Although board members decided to further evaluate a request for special stadium seating for the disabled, which would cost the district approximately $278,000, they voiced their support for the majority of the plan.
Katherine Sherman, a special education teacher at Elk Grove High School, whose disability has limited her mobility to a wheelchair, was a member of the district’s ADA committee.
“I’m glad I came tonight . . . they’ve been wonderful listeners,” said Sherman, who discussed the various needs of disabled people at a Board of Education meeting this month.
