A 91-year-old woman was in critical condition after being found frozen to her basement floor on Chicago’s West Side early Monday, officials said.
Victoria Moryn of the 1500 block of West Erie Street was taken to St. Mary of Nazareth Hospital Center, suffering from frostbite on both hands and feet, unstable blood pressure and hypothermia, according to a nursing supervisor.
Moryn was found at 8:20 a.m. after a neighbor called police and said he had not seen her in about week, police said.
Wood District patrol officers Margaret Garcia and John Ryan and Wood District Sgt. Michael McMahon entered Moryn’s house and found her in the basement, kneeling in a “praying position” with ice covering her legs, the police report said. She was frozen to the floor, with about an inch of ice covering the floor around her.
The officers kicked at the ice covering Moryn’s legs in order to free her, the report said. Police said water was leaking from the first floor into the basement and that the heat was off.
