Football sports writer Don Pierson wasted scads of space (Jan. 7) with his blueprint for fixing the Bears.

The blueprint was provided earlier in the season by fellow sports writer Fred Mitchell. In a couple of his after-the-game reports he said the cause of the Bears defeat was a breakdown in the Bears nickel defense and, another time, a breakdown in the Bears dime defense.

Forget all these million- and multimillion-dollar salaries. Forget unsigned free agents, slave agents and all other kinds of agents. Forget salary caps. If the Bears would spend just a few more pennies and put in a quarter or half-a-buck defense, their troubles would be over.
