Denise Kane, inspector general for the Department of Children and Family Services, deserves support for her efforts to establish clear standards of conduct for DCFS caseworkers.
One effective way to encourage these standards for DCFS employees would be to hire more professionally-trained social workers and require that they be licensed. Currently DCFS social workers, as well as social workers in other state departments, are exempt from licensing, while all other social workers in Illinois must be licensed.
