Nine Illinois firms, including eight from the Chicago area, are among the U.S. companies named as the best places for Hispanics when it comes to doing business.
The companies-Allstate, Ameritech, Kraft, McDonald’s, Sara Lee, Sears, State Farm, United Airlines and WMX Technologies (formerly Waste Management Inc.)-are among the companies named to Hispanic magazine’s annual Hispanic 100 list.
Companies are selected because of their employment opportunities and the commitment they have made to the Hispanic community, said Randy Belcher-Torres, magazine spokesman.
“We sent out a survey asking questions about hiring and recruitment, scholarships and grants, support for Hispanic organizations and minority vendor programs,” he said.
Hispanic magazine, started in 1988, is one of a growing number of publications addressing the nation’s fast-growing Hispanic population. This is the fourth year the magazine has published this list.
The list will be highlighted in the magazine’s January/February issue, which will be on newsstands next week.
It should be noted that its list differs from a similar sounding effort by Hispanic Business, another magazine that annually does a listing of the nation’s largest Hispanic-owned companies.
“It’s not surprising to see so many companies in the Chicago area on our list. There is a large, vibrant Hispanic community in the Chicago area,” said Alfredo J. Estrada, the magazine’s editor and publisher.
WMX Technologies was a newcomer to the list. Others on the list include: Aetna, American Express, Chase Manhattan, Coca-Cola, Dayton Hudson, Hallmark, Kmart, Kellogg, J.C. Penney and Toyota.
