OLDER ALCOHOLICS: One in three older alcoholics begin heavy drinking later in life. It may be difficult to spot an alcohol problem in someone 65 or older because the signs of excessive drinking, such as depression, memory loss, confusion, unsteady gait and reduced physical capacity, are similar to those of advanced age.
HOSPICE PROGRAMS: The hospice concept is growing, a new study by the National Hospice Organization shows. Fifty-three percent of hospice patients are male, 47 percent female. Seventy-eight percent of the patients had cancer, 10 percent heart conditions, 4 percent AIDS. The average length of stay was 64 days.
NOT A MUST, NOT A RISK: Jogging has also been associated with a high level of wear and tear arthritis as one gets older. If you enjoy jogging, and have no orthopedic problems, there is no evidence to say you should quit. Jogging is no longer a must for the person who wants to be healthy. Brisk walking three to four times per week might be enough to reduce heart risk.
