Farragut coach William Nelson insists he has spent much of this season pleading with his players to listen to him, often with frustrating results.
A certain amount of that frustration washed away Thursday when Farragut knocked off No. 17 Lincoln Park 67-61 in overtime in a Red West contest.
Frank Smith’s three-pointer with :15 seconds left in regulation play forced overtime, which Farragut (14-8, 5-5) started with a 10-0 run. William Farley scored four of his 12 points during the spurt. Smith finished with 15 points and Curtis Ganes led the winners with 20.
“Sometimes I have problems controlling the players. They get hyper and do the opposite of what I tell them,” Nelson said.
Farragut executed best when it trailed 52-48 with 1:10 left in regulation, holding Lincoln Park (18-4, 6-4) to just one point before overtime. Johnny Owens’ 18 points paced Lincoln Park.
Carver 59, Julian 50: Roy Majors scored 16 points for No. 3 Carver (23-1, 10-0) in the Red South.
Young 74, Marshall 61: Ben Sankey scored 22 points and Marcus Bonner had 17 as four Young (18-5, 8-2) players reached double figures in the Red West victory. John Wooten’s 19 paced Marshall.
Simeon 64, Fenger 58: No. 12 Simeon (16-5, 7-3) prevailed in the Red South as Bryant Notree scored 24 points and Kevin Turner added 22.
Collins 86, Manley 85: George Edwards (33 points) hit 1 of 2 free throws with seven seconds left and Terrance Daniels (11) picked off the ensuing inbounds pass to preserve Collins’ Red West victory. William Keys had 22 for Manley.
Crane 88, Near North 64: Crane (14-7, 11-0) clinched at least a tie for the Blue West title as Terance Askew and Robert Gilmore each scored 14 points.
Wells 65, Flower 64: John Lucas scored 19 points and three other players reached double figures as Wells won its first Blue West game since forfeiting nine victories due to an ineligible player. Flower’s 9-0 run over the final three minutes fell short.
Harlan 59, Kenwood 58: Damien Thurston (10 points) hit a 10-foot bank shot with two seconds to play to give Harlan, 7-4 in the Blue South, the victory. Anthony Tellis led the winners with 18.
CVS 105, Hirsch 47: Willie McDonald’s 25 points led 12 players in the scoring column for Chicago Vocational in the Blue South.
