A fire early Friday in a North Side apartment building killed a man and left six others, including four children, seriously injured.

A Chicago Fire Department spokesman said the building at 6100-02 N. Mozart St., which had more than a dozen apartments, apparently was equipped with only two smoke detectors.

The cause of the fire was undetermined, but arson appeared unlikely. The Cook County medical examiner’s office had not released the name of the man killed in the fire. The man, described as in his 40s, died at Ravenswood Hospital Medical Center at 7:25 a.m.

All but one of the six people injured were in critical condition at three hospitals suffering from burns, smoke inhalation or both. Those being treated were a 32-year-old mother, her 6-year-old son and her 11-year-old daughter; a 14-year-old girl; and a 58-year-old woman and 2-year-old girl who appear to be related.
