Robert Guenther, a retired Army lieutenant colonel, died Monday at Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago after a long illness. He was 78. Mr. Guenther, who was born in Chicago, enlisted in the Third Engineering Battalion in June 1941. He served during the raid on Pearl Harbor and participated in the invasion of Normandy in 1944. During World War II, he received many decorations, including the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart. Mr. Guenther is survived by two brothers. Memorial services were private.
