A senior center that the Addison Park District first started building two years ago has finally opened its doors, but the lawsuits of six subcontractors against the district are not resolved.

The subcontractors are seeking payment of about $116,000 for work performed before the district removed its original contractor, First American Development Corp. of Schaumburg, because of slow work.

Park Board President Roman Strzala said the Park District had paid about $190,000 to First American, but none of that money was paid to subcontractors. The district then hired a construction manager and the project was finished for $200,000 more than the $700,000 budgeted.

Strzala said the Park District is waiting to see if the surety bond company will pay for its additional costs, as well as pay the subcontractors.

“This is going to be a long, drawn out thing,” Strzala said. “But we should not be liable for any of the subcontractor payments.”

Strzala said that during construction, about 150 seniors who wanted to join the Addison Senior Citizen Club were turned away due to a lack of space.

“Now we’ll be able to accommodate as many senior citizens who want to join,” Strzala said.

Eventually, the 10,000-square-foot facility, which includes a kitchen, pottery area and television room, will be open six days a week.
