The technical program is worth one-third of a skater’s final score. It consists of eight required moves, which can be done in any order during a 2-minute, 40-second program.

The required elements are:

– A jump combination, which at this level is a triple jump and a double jump. The jumps must be executed without a step in between.

– A double jump of any kind except the double Axel. In order of difficulty, the jumps are: Axel (which has an extra one-half revolution), lutz, flip, loop, salchow, toe loop.

– A double Axel jump, in which the skater takes off moving forward, does 2 1/2 revolutions and lands on the opposite foot moving backward.

– Two footwork sequences. One must be a spiral sequence.

– A flying spin, which for the women is almost always a flying camel, in which the skater leaps into a spin with the leg held parallel to the ice.

– A layback or sideways-leaning spin.

– A spin combination, in which the skater must change the pivot foot at least once and the body position at least twice. Judges like to see at least three revolutions in each body position.

The judging is based on a perfect score of 6.0. The biggest deductions (.6) are for omitting a jump element. Omitting any of the other elements is a .4 deduction. Failure to do elements well brings deductions of .2 to .5 for jumps and .1 to .3 for everything else.
