New or expanding banks may be included in the list of service-oriented businesses prohibited from first floor locations in Hinsdale’s central business district.
The Zoning and Public Safety Committee, which is composed of Village Board members, voted this week to approve a recommendation by the Plan Commission to keep depository and non-depository credit institutions from moving into first-floor space in the downtown business area, which roughly centers on First and Washington Streets.
If the Village Board approves the committee’s recommendation Tuesday, such banks would join other service-type businesses-such as insurance, real estate and medical offices-from moving into first-floor spaces.
But, if a bank or other service-related business leaves a first-floor site and is not replaced by a similar business within six months, then the space could no longer be used for that type of business, administrative intern Chuck McMahon said.
Committee member Carol Goddard, who cast the only vote against the proposal, said banks should be treated differently from other service-oriented businesses because banks would draw people to the downtown shopping area. They also tend to be used by more local residents, she said.
