If I were a member of the English Department at New Trier High School, I would be insulted by a statement made by Supt. Henry Bangser.
In a Tribune article (March 2), he said that in hiring replacements for teachers leaving under the Five Plus Five retirement program, he may be willing to pay a higher salary for a leader of the orchestra than he would for a teacher of English. He justifies his willingness to pick up some less-experienced, less-pricey English teachers because the orchestra enjoys award-winning status.
A hiring policy of placing accolades over academics hits a sour note with this taxpayer, no matter how sweetly the orchestra may play.
